Can Swimming in a Pool Harm My Teeth?

With record temps predicted and plenty of seasonal fun to be had, things are definitely heating up this summer. But before you cool things down in that ice cold pool, make sure you know how to protect your oral health from accidental damage first!

Chlorine Concerns

Most pools use chlorine to keep the water clean and free of dangerous bacteria. The health benefits of this additive are undeniable, but that doesn’t mean it’s without its own risks. While in proper concentrations chlorine is safe to swim in, chlorinated pool water can be bad for your oral health. Prolonged exposure can cause a condition called swimmers calculus which can cause brown spots, sensitivity, and discoloration to the teeth. Thus, if you do decide to take a dip this summer, be sure to keep your mouth closed and don’t drink the water.

Walk, Don’t Run

Pool decks can be very dangerous when wet. That’s why your mom always warned you not to run around the pool.  Slippery conditions can easily cause falls that could break teeth or bones if you’re not careful. Furthermore, you should also take caution when jumping in or out of the pool, as this can also cause accidental injury to your mouth.

Disappearing Devices

If you wear any kind of oral health appliance such as a bite guard, retainer, orthodontic aligner, or denture, be sure to keep your mouth closed when you swim. That’s because your appliance can easily fall out of your mouth in the water and get swept away before you even have a chance to retrieve it. If you do lose your device in a pool, check your filters to see if it turns up there, and be careful where you step until it’s recovered. If you are still unable to locate your device, contact your dentist at once to order a replacement.

Don’t Forget Your SPF

Oral cancer is a growing problem around the world, and sun damage to your lips can increase your risk of developing it. When you go outside, be sure to put SPF on your entire body, including your face and lips. There are many lip balms available with SPF as well as sunscreens that are designed specifically for them, and for other sensitive areas of the face.

Remember, summertime is the season of fun, but safety always comes first. If you’ll be cooling down at the pool this year, keep these oral health tips in mind before you dive in!
